My Passion
Ten years ago I lost my mother to homelessness. Since then I’ve spent countless days wandering around various cities to better understand the community, their needs, and ultimately document their stories. While the rough exterior of this transient group may be rougher than tree bark, the compassion they have for their fellow human is unmatched; as survival is a day-to-day struggle, they understand the value of a pack of crackers, fresh water, or a listening ear.
I could not comprehend any of this until I dove as deep as I dared into their midst. The emotional and psychological fortitude they possess is rarely seen and only rewarded at a steep cost. So, the next time you see someone on the street, match their humanity with yours.
The images below are a part of a spec project from 2018. The goal was to renovate a square block in downtown Thomasville and give back to the community. The images are from that neighborhood and the first house we renovated.
